The members of Battuta are professional freelance period instrumentalists, based in London. Many of the players met as members of the European Union Baroque Orchestra, and this experience has given them an enviable introduction into the world of historically informed performance. Within a few years, the members of Battuta have played in some of Europe’s foremost period ensembles – Europa Galante, Musica Antiqua Köln, The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightment, Hanover Band, Amsterdam Baroque, Gabrieli Consort, English Concert, King’s Consort and more.

Battuta is an ideal opportunity for these young players to play together professionally for the first time in a like-minded ensemble. Larger, established groups have tended to lose some of the excitement of the early days of the authentic performance movement, and Battuta will regain that spirit of youthful, energetic rebellion in their concerts. The priorities of Battuta’s performances are dynamism, musicianship, humour, a strong interaction with the audience, and a focus on the spirit of the music rather than a dry, academic concert.

The orchestra is directed from the violin by George Crawford. This is historically more authentic, more exciting and more about equal chamber music forces than conductor plus orchestra would be.
