About Us

Hackney Proms was formed as a not-for-profit group in 2004 to introduce more high quality orchestral music to Hackney cultural life. The organisation became a Registered Charity in 2007 (no. 1120785).

Hackney Proms’ initial efforts were to promote a series of three Sunday-morning promenade concerts with the new Baroque chamber ensemble Battuta, at the Hackney Empire theatre in Spring 2005.

This concert series was a great success and helped establish a Baroque musical programme at the Empire. We obtained an Arts Council grant for another series and now have a well established Christmas concert every year.

Hackney Proms was founded by Dr. Paul Julian and Gordon Gregory. Both are long-term Hackney residents and non-professional musicians.
